Often when I go out with Linda we have good intentions and a destination, but many a time we are side tracked as happened on Sunday.
We ended up at Abenbury Church and me telling her of my recollections.
Abenbury Church was built in 1894 by Lady Palmer to celebrate the return of General Sir Roger Palmer on his safe return from the Crimean War and the Charge of the Light Brigade.
But this church was my Sunday School. Every Sunday I would walk the mile down the lane with my four sisters and three cousins to the church.
Easter Sunday we would all be in our new coats, hats, sandals and socks, all dressed up for the service accompanied by our parents.
Other special services would be Christmas, often walking down in the snow, and the Harvest Festival. Being a farming community Harvest Festival was always special with the church decorated with sheaves of corn, fruit and vegetables. One of the hymns we sang at that service would be, 'Come Ye Thankful People Come' and when we came to the line 'all is safely gathered in' my Dad would turn to us and whisper 'not quite'.
So lots of lovely memories of a happy childhood and what the church meant to the community.
It was sad to see the church had deteriorated since closing but even in a dilapidated state it still looks beautiful to me.
